Being a Correctional Officer requires a range of skills and attributes. This includes:

Experiences allow us to grow, learn and be more understanding. We are looking for people with lived experiences that can handle difficult situations, relate to people from a diverse range of backgrounds and see things from a different perspective. The maturity to be assertive whilst remaining level-headed, non-judgemental, fair and respectful will better prepare you to work in a correctional environment.

Good oral and written communication skills allow information to be shared and understood. We are looking for people who are good at communicating with a range of people and can do so in a respectful manner that gives others the opportunity to be heard too.

As a Correctional Officer, you will need to be ready for challenging behaviour. We are looking for people who can work well under pressure and can adapt, cope and bounce back when faced with challenging situations and environments.

As a Correctional Officer, we expect you to have a high level of integrity. We are looking for people who are honest and can consistently uphold strong moral and ethical principles and values.

Working in a correctional environment is fast-paced and often requires you to make sound decisions using available facts, evidence, and observations. We are looking for people who have great awareness, remain objective, can analyse information and can be decisive.

Being a positive role model can influence the choices detainees make and ultimately, make a positive difference to not only detainees’ lives but also their families and the community. We are looking for people who are motivated by helping others, have an interest in community safety and are willing to encourage detainees to make positive changes.

Correctional Officers support each other to provide a safe and secure environment for everyone in a correctional environment. We are looking for people who are willing to be a team player, are trustworthy and dependable.

You will also need to be willing to work a 24/7 rostering arrangement on a 12-hour shift pattern, have a full driver’s licence, have a Working with Vulnerable People registration, be medically fit, undergo a police check, and declare any associations or conflicts of interest.

While no specific experience or qualification is needed, Correctional Officers are required to complete a Certificate III in Correctional Practice as part of the mandatory training.
