Disability Action & Inclusion Plan

The ACT Corrective Services Disability Action and Inclusion Plan

The ACT Corrective Services (ACTCS) Disability Action and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) is an action stemming from the ACT Government’s Disability Justice Strategy 2019 – 2029, which is a ten-year commitment “to achieve equity and inclusion for people with disability in the justice system.”

ACTCS DAIP 2021-2023

In December 2020, ACTCS launched the first ACTCS DAIP 2021-2023 to demonstrate ACTCS’ commitment to provide an inclusive and equitable service across operations. The actions in the DAIP aim to address barriers experienced by people with disability, including staff members, detainees, offenders in the community, and community members.

Accessing the expertise of appropriate internal and external stakeholders, including people with lived experience, has been crucial to the successful delivery of the actions in the plan.

ACTCS DAIP 2024-2026

In December 2023, ACTCS launched the ACTCS DAIP 2024-2026 to continue ACTCS’ commitment to provide an inclusive and equitable service across operations.

The 2024-2026 DAIP builds on the successes from the first DAIP while reflecting advancements in ACTCS’ organisational maturity in relation to disability. The commitments seek to improve the current supportive environment for people with disability to ensure that a whole-of-agency focus is given to identified gaps, service improvements and to ensuring collective responsibility for supporting stakeholders with disability.

The commitments in the DAIP are underpinned by three key principles:

The ACTCS DAIP 2024-2026 identifies commitments across four focus areas for implementation over the next three years including:

To ensure that the commitments stated in the ACTCS DAIP 2024-2026 are coordinated, monitored, and delivered, the actions have been prioritised into three tranches:

Disability Framework

In September 2023, ACTCS released the Disability Framework.

The Disability Framework (the Framework) provides a guide for what best practice looks like in the correctional environment when working with clients with disability.

Many staff already demonstrate the principles of the Framework in their day-to-day work and implementation of the Framework will enable a more consistent service approach across the agency.

This framework is a roadmap for future service improvement within ACTCS and will be operationalised through the next Disability Action and Inclusion Plan.

The Disability Framework is available to read.
