Extended Throughcare is a voluntary program that aims to promote and contribute to community safety through coordinating community resources to support eligible detainees leaving the Alexander Maconochie Centre. It ensures supports are established in the areas of housing, health, income, family and community connections, and other basic needs.
Where possible, support commences pre-release, and can be accessed for one-year post-release. Support involves:
- individual needs-based assessment;
- service liaison / coordination, including referrals and advocacy;
- day of release support;
- intensive outreach support for some, facilitated through referral to one of several community organisations; and
- limited brokerage.
Throughcare includes pre-release planning by the Assisted Release into Community Program and may include linking the client with an outreach provider to assist them with reintegrating into the community.
Targeted support is also available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander offenders, which includes working closely with families to develop strong and enduring supports.
Extended Throughcare participants are able to access support in the community by attending the ACTCS Reporting Centre and asking to speak with a Throughcare Officer. Alternatively, the Extended Throughcare team can be reached on (02) 6205 5055 or by email: throughcare@act.gov.au.
